In celebration of the International Day for Women in Maritime (18 May), we’re proud to spotlight voices that are helping shape the future of the industry. This year’s theme, “An Ocean of Opportunities for Women”, speaks volumes about the shift happening across global maritime.

At Comet Growth, we believe visibility creates change. That’s why we sat down with one of our clients, Ann Kathrin Hårklau from Havtech AS , to hear about her journey into maritime, the challenges she’s faced, and what she wants to see going forward.

There’s a lot of opportunity here; especially for women who are ready to lead, says Ann Kathrin.

She didn’t start her career in maritime. With a background in banking, it wasn’t until she joined HAVTECH in 2022 that her path shifted toward the shipping sector.

I had some exposure through clients in the financial world, she says, but working hands-on in maritime opened up a whole new world of insight, speed, and innovation.

Women being heard

That transition wasn’t without its challenges. “Earlier in my career, I often felt unheard. Women weren’t always taken seriously,” she reflects. “But that’s changing. There’s more awareness now, and more women are stepping up – and being seen.”

When asked what’s still needed for true inclusion, she points to both internal and external factors.

Yes, companies need to offer equal opportunities. But women also need to believe they belong in leadership roles. Confidence is part of the equation.

Her vision for the industry is clear: more women at every level – especially in decision-making roles. “We bring different perspectives, we challenge the status quo, and that leads to stronger solutions.”

So, what’s her advice to women considering a career in maritime?

Be yourself. Don’t let self-doubt steer the ship. This industry needs your voice.

At Comet Growth, we’re proud to cooperate with clients like HAVTECH who embrace progress and amplify diverse voices. There is an ocean of opportunity- and it’s growing every day.🌊🌱
